Your first activity today will be to fill out the Mad-Libs Handout with great words for each part of speech. Use lively verbs and vivid nouns!  


Part of Speech
Noun names a person, place, or thing.
       Proper noun names  particular person, place, or thing.
               Twin Falls, Idaho; American Fork Junior High,
       Plural noun = more than one      Singular noun = just one
              desks, lockers, candies                  desk, locker, candy                
Verb shows action or state of being -- run, jump, hide, is, smells, sleeps
Action verb examples:  run, jump, hide
Adjective --describes, adds information about a noun or pronoun
    Examples of adjectives:  red, tall, slimy, slippery, fast, morbid
Adverb -- describes or adds information to a verb or an adjective or another adverb

You may take your Mad-Libs papers with you, or turn them in to the top basket.


2. Scavenger Hunt for External Text Features
External Text Features, Alphabetically 
  •      You are to find 15 small posters and identify the external text feature on each.
  •      You have 15 minutes, then come back to class.
  •      Be on your best behavior.
  •      Keep the noise DOWN in the halls.
  •      Do not disturb other classes -- either from outside or inside the school.
  • Ms. Dorsey will check the first few back to see who gets a small candy prize for being quick and correct! 
  • Then check your own -- see the whiteboard.
  • Make sure your name is on your paper, and hand it in. 

Hand in your paper to the top wire basket before you leave today.

3. Visit the Media Center to Find Nonfiction Books:  Literary Nonfiction, Biography, Autobiography
  •      Mrs. Jones will tell you about some of the books.
  •      Sign up for your nonfiction books by November 4/5.
  •      Look for books or read your own nonfiction book.
  • Take your backpack, but leave it in the cubbies by the door!
  • Sign-ups for the November book are due by our next class.
