Reminders and Announcements: 
Parent-Teacher Conference, November 20, 3:30 to 7:30
We ended up having a half-day of school so students (and teachers) could go to the football game. 
November book projects are due Monday (B-Day) or Tuesday (A-Day).

1.  iWrite:  CIVIC DISPOSITIONS
Write this in your composition book under "Notes and QuickWrites" and label it
"What Compassion Looks Like."
What does compassion look like at school?  How does a compassionate person behave?  What specific things does he or she say and do (and think)? What would you see and hear and feel in a classroom or other places in the school if we were compassionate?
Write at least a half page.

Definition
Compassion :  feelings of kindness, caring, and empathy at the advocacy level.







2. When you are finished writing, read a book -- your nonfiction book if you have not finished it.
Your book projects are due on Monday (B-Day) or Tuesday (A-Day).

3. Improve your "Causes of Good Grades" essay.
      Today we will look at Thesis and Topic Sentence (Central Ideas).

Look at and highlight model essays.

  • Pick your own partner.
  • You need only one copy of the essay for you and your partner.
  • Write both of your names on the paper, then do the highlighting.

Friendship Model Essay


Thesis and Topic Sentence in green. (for GO)
Find the thesis (topic sentence/central idea) for the whole essay in the first paragraph.
Highlight the topic sentence for each paragraph in green.

Transitions in yellow.
Highlight the words or phrases that help the essay flow from one paragraph to the next, that show the relationships between that paragraph and the rest of the essay.

Conclusion in red.  (for Stop) 
Highlight or underline the sentence in the last paragraph that wraps up the whole essay.

When we check this, copy the correct answers onto your paper.
Hand it in with both of your names on it.

Our First Class Novel: The Outsiders

 4.  We will watch a scene from the movie 
                     Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  
  
5.  We will watch a short clip from the novel The Outsiders 
        by  S. E. Hinton. 
      
      Both of these movies are about "outsiders." 
       And, like you, the narrator of The Outsiders, at the beginning of the book, has just seen a movie with Paul Newman.

6. Today we will begin learning about some important Elements of Literature. Discuss:  In the clip from The Outsiders (and in the clip from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), what are the. . .
