1.  Improving your essay: using supporting detail
  •  In your composition book under "Notes and QuickWrites," copy this list of  
    • Types of Supporting Details
      • examples
      • facts
      • opinions
      • personal observations and experiences
      • quotations 
      • statistics (when available and helpful)
  • Watch a brief PowerPoint about Supporting Details [http://www.sophia.org/tutorials/supporting-details] and 


2.  Write a paragraph or more beginning with this central idea:
This Thanksgiving we should take time to be grateful.  

Today, use more than one type of supporting detail, including a quotation.  
Receive a list of quotations. Select one to use in your paragraph, or use another you've memorized.
Highlight your supporting details in yellow. 

Citing the Opinion = Giving Credit Where Credit is Due
Cite the opinion with words such as "According to. . .  "  or  "_________ once said, '. . . .  . . .'"
Use quotation marks around the quote. 

Make sure you have a topic sentence, supporting details sentences (including a quotation), and a concluding sentence. 

3. If you finish early, spend your extra time reading or working on your November project.

Check the organization of your essay:  

  • Do you have a thesis in the introductory paragraph?
  • Do you have a topic sentence for each body paragraph?
  • Are you using helpful transition words or phrases?
  • Do you have a concluding paragraph with a concluding sentence?

  • Make sure you are using at least one outside source. 
  • Check for a message from Ms. Dorsey.
  •      Look also for embedded comments. 
  • Read through the suggestions from MyAccess. 
  • After you have written your essay use MyTutor and MyEditor.

  • What are the differences between two different holiday meals at your house?   For example, how is your main Thanksgiving  meal different from your main Christmas meal, or different from what and how you eat on New Year's or on the Fourth of July or on another holiday?
