A bibliography is a list of the sources the author used while preparing the book, article,  essay, or other text.

Footnotes are notes found at the "foot"  of a page.  You will see a number up in the text, and the same number will be found at the beginning of the note that explains for provides more information about that place in the text.

  • The index is found at the back of the book.  It is an alphabetized list of topics found in the book, with page numbers to indicate where in the book you would find those topics.

  • A "sidebar" or text box can be at the side of the page, at the top,  at the bottom, or somewhere in between.  These add supplementary information on the same page as the main text. 

  • "Sidebars" or Text Boxes can contain text, pictures, charts, and other  external text features.

  • The table of contents is found toward the beginning of the book, and it lists, in order, what you will find in the book.  Topics or titles are accompanied by the page numbers where you will find them.

  • Typographical Text Features that use changes in font: 
    These are often used to make certain words or other parts of the text stand out, saying "Pay attention to this!"  

    Another way font differences are used is to help you know when something is different from the rest of the text.   For instance,  if a caption is close to the main text, it may be in italics or a different sort, size, or color of font to let you know it isn't just part of the main body of text.

External Text Features

A caption is a small text found near a picture or other illustration that gives the reader important information about the picture.
