Check for Theme


A theme is a central idea for fiction.
When you think you have discovered a theme in a work of literature, check it with this table:  


Theme
A theme is a big, important idea.  It can be applied in many situations and to many people.
A theme is an opinion or belief – usually one held by the author. 
A theme will be stated as a complete sentence.
A theme will contain both a topic/subject and an opinion about that topic.
A theme will not be a single word or phrase or a question.
