Announcements and Reminders:
Today is Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Here's some piratical vocabulary:  Pirate Talk
By the way, my favorite pirate book is   Pirates! by Celia Rees which is an historical fiction book about women pirates (women who become pirates) in the Caribbean.   It's a long book, but very exciting, and is recommended for students in 6th through 9th grade.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held

today from 3:30 to 7:30.

If you did not finish the Edmodo assignment -- answering two  questions about The Outsiders -- in class, finish it outside of class as soon as possible.

  • Scholastic book orders are due by September 25.   Class Activation Code: GKLJW  https://clubs2.scholastic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/LogonForm
  • Consider entering the PTSA Reflections contest.   Extra Credit Opportunity!
  • You should have your Book of the Month Basic 8 book read by today, September 19, so you will have time to write your assignment.  You may hand in a hard copy, or complete it on Edmodo, either before or on September 23 -- next Monday.
  • Pick up your composition book.

2. iRead:   Individual reading time: Read quietly and individually.  You could find books on the shelves, but it's best if you are reading your book for your assignment.

  • Write down at least three things you notice about them.

The sentences:

Avon, a rather small snail, reads a book every day.
-- Avi, The End of the Beginning (2004)

Ty, a defensive back, was only a few yards from her.

from the Echo Falls series by Peter Abrahams

Why Are the Commas There?
In your composition book, label the next page
"When Do We Use Commas?"
Chose one of these sentences to copy.    Why are the commas in these two sentences?

Reason #1 to Use Commas

Just for fun because Avon was a snail who had a shell :  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF9-sEbqDvU
