Book Discussions Today!
Make sure you've finished reading your book by today!
Don't forget to bring treats, if you so desire -- preferably to share with three or four classmates. Also, today is the day for your spelling test on Lie/Lay. And it's time to order books from Scholastic! Books make great Christmas gifts. Our genres after Christmas include historical fiction, nonfiction (including biographies, autobiographies, and books on a single subject/literary nonfiction), graphic novels and novels told using poetry, and more opportunities for your own choice. Pick up our catalogues and order before Thanksgiving Break! Our Class Activation Code: GKLJW |

Today’s Agenda:
B-Day classes -- Drawings
1. Prepare for Book Discussions.
Book Discussion Demo Title, Author Summary Rating Original Passage: Third Person Bod was a quiet child with sober grey eyes and a mop of tousled mouse colored hair. He was, for the most part, obedient. He learned how to talk, and once he had learned, he would pester the graveyard folk with questions. "Why amn't I allowed out of the graveyard," he would ask, or "How do I do what he just did?" or "Who lives in here?" The adults would do their best to answer his questions. Changed Passage: First Person I was a quiet child with sober grey eyes and a mop of tousled mouse colored hair. I was, for the most part, obedient. I learned how to talk, and once I had learned, I would pester the graveyard folk with questions. "Why amn't I allowed out of the graveyard," I would ask, or "How do I do what he just did?" or "Who lives in here?" The adults would do their best to answer my questions.
Why third person?
An omniscient third person narrator can see what is going on anywhere, and can know the thoughts of other characters.
In this book, the author shows us other characters before Bod even meets them, such as the ghouls and the girl Scarlett. He can take us along with the bullies even when Bod isn't around. If the book were written in first person, we couldn't see and hear and know all of those things.
In fact, Bod was so small when he came to the graveyard, that he probably wouldn't even remember it to be able to tell us about it.
Book Discussions Should your group finish early, prepare for the spelling test, read, visit, or prepare for more Outsiders reading by creating the chart in your composition book and beginning to fill it out. Who read a science fiction or fantasy book? Can you recommend it to the whole class? 2. More about argument
