A1
1. Individual Reading
Complete this exercise with your Book of the Month.
Copy one paragraph (at least six sentences) from your book.  It is better not to use all dialogue. Underline the words you need to change to convert it from first person to third person or from third person to first person.  If it is written in second person, see me.
  • See the direction sheet provided.    Point of View Switch.docx  If you are doing this at home, click on the link, click on the tab for Download. Open the document.
  • Make sure you have another student check it.
  • Then print it to hand in.
You need at least four underlined and changed words, in six sentences or so (or fewer long sentences).
You need your own name and period.
You need the title of the book and the page from which you took the passage.
Label each paragraph with Point of View.
Use correct capitalization and punctuation.

Example
Page 92 of The Graveyard Book
The Original:  Third Person
It's going to eat me, he thought bitterly.  Smart, Bod.  And he thought of his home in the graveyard, and now he could no longer remember why he had ever left.  Monster dog or no monster dog, he had to get back home once more.  There were people waiting for him.
He pushed past the beast, jumped down to the next step four feet below, fell his height, landed on his ankle, which twisted underneath him, painfully, and he dropped, heavily, onto the rock.

Changed to First Person
It's going to eat me, I thought bitterly.  Smart, Bod.  And I thought of my home in the graveyard, and now I could no longer remember why I had ever left.  Monster dog or no monster dog, I had to get back home once more.  There were people waiting for me.

Another Example:
Page 16 of Michael Vey 5: Storm of Lightning by Richard Paul Evans.

The Original: First Person
The Electroclan and I are on a flight back to the United States from
Taiwan.  We just rescued a young Chinese girl named Jade Dragon from
the Elgen.  We were at a safe house in Taiwan when we learned that the
Timepiece Ranch, the headquarters of the resistance, had been
destroyed by Elgen forces.  The last communication we received from
the voice is that there were no survivors.
For me this is personal.  My mother was at the ranch.

Practicing for Argument --  A1 did not do this yet.

Remember the difference whether or not it takes an object.

Practice:  Here is the worksheet: recline:put to lie:lay practice.docx  If you are doing this at home,  click on the link, click on the tab for Download. Open the document.
For each of these sentences tell whether the verb form is past, present, future, participle, or perfect.
Then change the verb to the correct lie or lay verb.

Harold reclines in the arm chair.

Harold puts his sister in a car seat.

Leslie reclined on the Spongebob Squarepants chair.

Leslie put her purse on the Spongebob Squarepants chair.

Mark will recline in his hotel room.
