The Giver, Chapters 3 and 4 -- Summary
Summary of Chapter 3 : Jonas’ father brings home the new child Gabriel. Jonas notices that Gabriel has the
same sort of lighter eyes that Jonas has. Lighter eyes are rare in the community.
Lily likes the new child and says she would like to be a
birth mother, but she is chastised by her mother for saying that. Her mother explains that birthmother
is an assignment with little honor, and after a birth mother has borne three
children, she becomes a laborer for the rest of her life.
Her father explains that the birth mothers never even get
to see their babies.
Jonas remembers a bewildering experience he had. He and Asher were playing catch with
an apple and suddenly, as it moved through the air, the apple Jonas saw
something abut the apple briefly change. Asher didn’t see the same thing. Jonas was so confused by the strange happening that
he broke the rules and took the apple home. It did not change again, so he was left wondering what had
happened. As the
chapter ends, it again mentions the pale, knowing eyes that both Jonas and
the newchild Gabriel have.

Summary of Chapter 4: Jonas goes to do his volunteer hours at the House of the
Old. His best friend Asher and a
female eleven that he likes are there.
Her name is Fiona. The
receptionist tells him that they had celebrated a release that morning.
Jonas is feeling a bit apprehensive still about what
assignment he will receive at the December ceremonies because none of the
places he has done volunteer hours has fit him better than the others. He thinks about other elevens
who have excelled as they volunteered at one place or another.
He joins Asher and Fiona as they each bathe one of the
old. He helps a woman
named Larissa, and she tells him about the celebration of release that
morning for a man named Roberto.
She says it was wonderful.
Neither of them know where the person goes after the ceremony of
release.
