Today’s Agenda for Thursday/Friday, March 22/23, 2018:
Reminder: A central idea is a single idea, stated in a complete declarative sentence.
If you haven't handed in your book project, turn it in if you have it. This assignment will be no-count until the end of the day on Friday, March 23. A theme is a universal message (usually found in fiction), while a CENTRAL IDEA is specific to one book or story and is usually found in nonfiction. What is the book saying about the subject (topic) of the book? This assignment asks for a CENTRAL IDEA. Examples: NOT A CENTRAL IDEA: Men who survived a storm on Mount Everest. THIS IS A CENTRAL IDEA: Five men survived a storm on Mount Everest because they helped each other. Here is a specific example by a student: "The rescue of the Chilean miners trapped in the San Jose Mine was by the combined efforts of many people." This is an effective central idea because it is specific to the book, and it expresses an idea that is repeated many times in the book. It is a complete declarative sentence. If you need to revise your book project, and hand it back in, staple it to the original green sheet you handed in. 1. Pick up a pink handout for commas with adjectives. Carefully study it, and complete exercises #1 and #2. 2. Computer Lab 205 to revise and finish your Genetic Engineering Essays. A. Peer Reviews B. Revise, Edit, and Finish your Essay If you finish early, you may work on your book project or play the games linked from Google Classroom or read a book of your choosing. |
