Conventions in Sentences Investigations
Recognizing the Parts of a sentence. Is it all there?
1.  In your composition book under  CSI Sentences/Grammar.  Page 83/84 +
label this CSI #      ,   and add today's date -- March 12/13, 2018. 
Copy this sentence: 

The llama in the red pajamas gave his mama a 

flower because he loves her. 

1. Place parentheses around any prepositional phrases. (  ) 
2. Circle the simple verb or verbs.  [The action or what is being done.]   
3.  Underline the simple subject(s).   Who or what is doing the verbs?
4.  Double underline the object(s).  Who or what is affected by the action of the verb(s)?  
5.  Write the answer to this question: Is the sentence simple, compound, or complex?  Why?  

By the way, it is a declarative sentence.

Introduction Sentence
  • Thesis statement states that there are advantages and disadvantages to the topic (all in one sentence).

Body Paragraph 1
  • Paragraph begins with a topic sentence stating the advantages of the central idea of the paragraph.
·  Topic sentence is indented.
·  Each sentence begins with a capital letter.
·  Each sentence is punctuated correctly.
·  Paragraph contains at least two pieces of evidence from the texts to support the topic sentence.
·  Evidence is introduced. (EX: According to …)
·  Evidence is cited. (Where did the information come from?)
·  All of the sentences relate to the central idea.
·  Explanation about how each quote relates to the topic sentence is included.
·  Transitions are used effectively. (EX: For example,…; In addition,…; Also,…; Another reason…)

3. Writing a quick informational essay.  
In an informational essay, you are not taking a side, just sharing information.

Prompt:  Write a brief essay, explaining advantages and disadvantages of Daylight Saving Time.

B. Write the essay: 
Introduction:   Give a brief definition of Daylight Saving Time.   End with a thesis sentence that says something like "Daylight Saving Time has both Advantages and Disadvantages."

Body Paragraph 1:  Tell briefly about your experience with the change to DST.

Paragraph 2:  Tell about two advantages of DST.  Introduce, quote and cite from your sources. Explain each quote.

Paragraph 3:  Tell about two disadvantages of DST.  Introduce, quote and cite from your sources. Explain each quote.

Conclusion

Hand in what you have at the end of the period.
