Announcements and Reminders Thursday/Friday, October 25/26, 2018:    On Thursday                          of a regular Cavetime we had a lockdown drill.  The AFPD was here running the drill with us. Students followed the directions from the teacher         and were SILENT!   They made sure their phones were off.  Add words or meanings or comments to the slang charts. a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people.

Targets for Today: I can spell commonly confused words.   (State Core, Language 2b) I can find evidence in a text, make connections and inferences, and explain why the evidence is significant.  (Writing 1, a and b)

Either way there's not going to be any blood feud between our outfit and Shepherd's.  If we needed them tomorrow they'd show, . . . . if they asked us for help [in a rumble]], we'd show."  The rumbles Two-Bit is talking about here are big battles between Socs and Greasers.  This passage shows us an example of people (different groups of Greasers) who fight among themselves, but  stand together against their common enemy, the Socs.  The Outsiders shows that working against a common enemy can unite people.

If You Were Absent: Study your spelling words, and come in to get caught up on The Outsiders.

Vocabulary: Theme is the main idea of the story, the discovery about life that we take away from the story.  Ask yourself --  1. Did the main character change? How? 2. What is the title of the story? Does it give a clue about the theme? 3. What do important parts of the story suggest about its message?

You can't always judge correctly based on appearances.  We have more in common than we have differences.  Sometimes love doesn't look like love to the one who's being loved.  Setting boundaries is a way of expressing love.   Family can be more than just those who are related by blood.  Parents, not a person's outside environment, have the biggest impact on how a kid turns out.  Focusing on superficial differences can lead to hate and violence.  Working together against a common enemy can unite people.  Under the right circumstances, people don't always behave as you expect them to. Having outsiders and insiders in a community is bad for both the outsiders and the insiders. Just because a person belongs to a certain group doesn’t mean he or she will act like the rest of the group. We all need love and understanding.  No one is so hard he or she doesn’t need to receive and give love. Material belongings don't necessarily bring satisfaction. Sometimes we understand the least about the people we're closest to.
