Gerunds

To determine whether you are dealing with a gerund, use the "drug test."
Replace the word(s) with the word "drugs."

gerund is a noun made from a verb by adding "-ing." The gerund form of the verb "read" is "reading." You can use a gerund as the subject, the complement, or the object of a sentence. 

participle
a word formed from a verb (e.g., goinggonebeingbeen ) and used as an adjective (e.g., working womanburned toast ) or a noun (e.g., good breeding ). In English, participles are also used to make compound verb forms (e.g., is goinghas been )
