Allusions in Lyrics

"We Didn’t Start the Fire" by Billy Joel

There were 115 different allusions in this song written by Billy Joel. He decided to write a song about the major headline news stories that happened in his life, from the years 1949-1989. The name of the song and the chorus refer to “the fire”, which is in itself an allusion to conflict and turmoil in society. He says “we didn’t start the fire” to say that you can’t blame his generation (the baby boomer generation) for all the problems in the world, since many of them happened when they were growing up and they had no control over it. The “fire” has always been burning since humanity existed, and will continue to burn, as it is human nature.

On May 28, plan on partying like it's 2014!  Bring treats.  We'll play English class games (like Sparkle) and eat -- if you remember to bring treats!

Today’s Agenda:
1. Listen to The Giver.
B5  Disc 2, Track 9, Minute 4:50 to page 81, "damp rope." to chapter 12, Disc 2, Track 12 pg. 88
B6  Disc 2, Track 10, Minute 3:30 page 84, "just now and then." to Disc 3, Track 2   page 97
B7 page 78 from Disc 2, Track 8, Minute 5:23 to Disc 3, Track 5 -- page108
B8 to disc 3, track 3, minute 1:19, page 101

2. Play "In the Manner of the Adverb."

  • Divide into two teams.
  • Select a TIMER and a SCORE KEEPER from each team.
  • Each team selects two players who will leave the room.
  • The rest of the players for each team in the room choose from the box an adverb, one that describes how you might do something.
  • If needed, they clarify the meaning of the adverb.
  • The other players are called back into the room.
  • If anyone from any of the teams reveals their adverb early, the team loses ten points.
  • The task of the student who has been out of the room is to guess the adverb by having other players act it out. He can call up any number of players from his team, give them any scenario, and then tell them to act it out “in the manner of the adverb,” or in the style of whatever adverb they’ve chosen.
  • For instance, he could call up two students and tell them to talk on the phone to each other in the manner of the adverb.
  • If the adverb chosen was “chivalrously,” the two players could talk on the phone "in the manner of the adverb" by being extra courteous on their phone call, or one could pretend to pick up the phone and say something like, “Good lady, what dost thou require? Might there be some dragon that I may slay for thy fair hand?” The main goal should be to act in a way that the other player can guess the adverb.
  • If the adverb is guessed within one minute, the team earns 10 points, if it takes longer, the guessers may select another activity and if they guess correctly, the team earns 5 points.
  • Sample scenarios:  at a party, flying a plane, taking a test, babysitting, . . .

3. Test on Prefixes and Suffixes.

(You may retake the test, if needed next Tuesday or Wednesday during cave time.)

An adequate example:
When the study guide is flat, no words can be seen on either side -- except your name on one of the side flaps.

After you've folded it to form a W and opened it up, your prefixes with their meanings go on these "inside" sections.

After you've folded it the other way to form a W and opened it up, your suffixes with their meanings go on these "inside" sections.   Oops-- the "-s" does not create adjectives.  In this case it turns nouns into plurals.  The suffix "-ly" creates adverbs.
