Wednesday/Thursday, May 17/18, 2017

Announcements and Reminders:

Mrs. Mace is coming on this Friday, May 19!  She and baby will be in my room during Cavetime, so come by if you'd like to see her!  (Baby Hyrum is much bigger now!)

Friday is the last day to hand in late work, revised work, and extra credit.

Let me know if you have revised or finished and improved your score on your short story on MyAccess.

Check the Book Fines List for your name.

Pick up your composition book, and a literature book, if you don't have one.

Targets for Today:

I can recognize figurative language in literature.
I can use commas correctly.

Today’s  Agenda:

We will grade your composition books next time.  Be ready with all of the prompts we've written in the past few weeks.

Label this entry "Heroes," and add today's date.
Who are your heroes?   Why?
What does having a hero do for a person?  Does that influence a person?  Are some heroes "better" to have than others?
Write about your hero(es) or about heroes in general.
Write at least a half-page in your composition book.

Things to think about:
Designer Dad:  (and cosplay)

Commas review and test.
(A1, A2 already took the test.)

COMMAS
A2 did the review and took the test.

If time, take a comma quiz on Mastery Connect.  If not, we will take it next time.
Hint:  Read each sentence, watching for where you would slightly pause.
Many sentences are made up of chunks of words.  Sometimes we use commas  between the chunks to keep the meaning clear (and to give us a chance to breath.)

Pay attention to these examples.
After midnight,  we should all be in bed.

Although Jason wanted to eat the doughnut, he knew he should save it for Henry.

You won't, however, be able to hand in extra credit after Friday.

After the seventh grade dance, we went out for ice cream.

Yes, you do need to have your poster turned in by the end of tomorrow.

American Fork Junior High, the best junior high in the district,  is known for great music programs.

The last day of school will be only two hours long, so some students are staying home.

On Yearbook Day, you can choose J-Dawgs, pizza, or a lunch you bring.

Yearbook Day is not a day for classwork, but almost everyone wants to come to spend time with friends.

Dear Jasper,
Thanks for being my friend this year and for helping me so much with math!
Sincerely,
Lloyd

No, I didn't buy a yearbook.

Because Anthony was late, he missed getting a treat.

Anthony missed getting a treat because he was late.

Oh, I should have handed in that assignment last time!

Jerry, did you go to the play?

I'm sorry, Mrs. Dorsey, that I forget to bring my photo last time.
B6 to here.

We will, however, have about ten minutes to finish the assignment today.

I  plan, of course,  to bring my photo today.

B6 didn't do this yet.

Your composition books will be graded next time.

Fact vs. Opinion
In your composition book, respond to this quote:
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."                                                    King James Version of the Bible -- John 8:32
How important is the truth?

(A1 did not yet write to the prompt.) Fact or Opinion? What Makes Either?

If You Were Absent:
