Citations -- Citing Your Sources

Formula for In text citations:  Introduce+Give+Cite=In-text Citations

INTRODUCE THE QUOTE, USUALLY BY TELLING WHO SAID IT.
GIVE THE QUOTE -- EXACTLY AS YOU FOUND IT IN THE BOOK.
THOUGH YOU CAN EXTRACT PIECES FROM A QUOTE,
   USING ELLIPSES . . .
ALSO USE QUOTATION MARKS AROUND A DIRECT QUOTE.
USE A PARENTHETICAL CITATION TO SHOW WHICH PAGE
    IT COMES FROM (135).

Note:  Because you are using only one source for this essay, and you will have included the title and author in your introduction, you need use only the page numbers in your parenthetical (in parentheses) citations.  When you use more than one source, you will include more information in the parenthetical citations.

Example of a parenthetical citation:

Thomas Edison declared, “Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up" (8).

More examples:

Ponyboy Curtis testified that,   "I ducked and tried to run for it, but the Soc caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face in the fountain" (55-56).

YOUR SCORING:

Citations  for up to 5 points --
5 or more quotes are correctly cited. There is at least one quote, correctly cited, in each of the first three body paragraphs. At least two others must be found in the essay, in body paragraphs, hook, background information, counterclaim, or conclusion
Use mostly parenthetical citations.  If you use  informal introductions to the quotations such as “Ponyboy Curtis reports that. . . . “, use a variety of kinds of introductions.

Example:   You found this quote in the novel.
"I bet we started it.  We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something."  Ponyboy Curtis on page 91

Turn it into an in-text citation:
Introduction           "Quote"            (Cite).

Ponyboy Curtis said, "I bet we started it.  We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something" (91).

Another example: You found this quote in the novel.
"I can't take much more.  I'll kill myself or something."  -- Johnny Cade"Don't. You can't kill yourself, Johnny" -- Ponyboy Curtis on page 47
Your assignment is to turn it into an in-text citation.
Introduction           "Quote"            (Cite).
Ponyboy testified that Johnny had said, "I can't take much more.  I'll kill myself or something." and Ponyboy replied, "Don't. You can't kill yourself, Johnny" (47).
