Announcements and Reminders for Tuesday/Wednesday, January 22/23, 2019:
Welcome to class! 
As you come in, 
  • pick up a copy of the Observe, Question, Compare organizer at the back
  • and get out your composition books.
Don't forget to contribute to Penny Wars this week!  

If you have not already completed these assignments, finish and hand them in as soon as possible:
You should have finished typing your argument essay on MyAccess.   
You were to have finished it and submitted it by Friday evening, January 11.  
You may still do this. 
You are able to also work on your essay at home.

You were to hand in your packet by Monday or Tuesday, January 14 or 15.
You may still do this.  Please make sure you have completed these assignments.   

  • Also, if you have not handed in your waiver, get that signed and handed in. 
  • If you haven't handed in your mini-bio, turn that in.  



Targets for Today:

Writing 2a: Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using strategies such as .[text structure and] . . . . ; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
ELA-RI 7.5:
I can analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas.
ELA-L 7.1a:
I can explain the function of phrases and clauses in general and their function in specific sentences.

Sentence Structure Study:  Using Mentor Sentences

In the notes portion of your notebook, write the following words:
Noun
Pronoun 
Verb
Adjective
Adverb
Preposition

Sentence #1  from How They Croaked

"They gave him tartar emetic, a chemical to make him throw up” (87).

The pattern:  
(ProNoun) (verb) (who or what the "emetic" was given to) (noun), (phrase that renames the noun).

Imitation using the same pattern:  
Hermione showed Harry and Ron her time-turner, an hourglass necklace that could take them back in time.

(Noun) (verb) (who or what the "time-turner" was shown to) (noun), (phrase that renames the noun).
 


Sentence #2  from How They Croaked
"He loved everything about the military: the camping, the training, and the killing” (12).

What is the pattern?

Work on recognizing the sentence patterns in the sentences given above.
Try imitating them.
When you get a chance, read the assigned chapter from How They Croaked, and look for the text features in that chapter and in the others you've already read.
