Announcements and Reminders:

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

If you haven't typed your short story into MyAccess yet, do that as soon as possible.  You may revise and edit up until October 11.  We need that deadline so your scores can go on this term.
You will have some time in class to finish up on October 10/11.
Watch for feedback from Ms. Dorsey on MyAccess, in an email or message, or as a hard copy.
Watch for comments and embedded comments on MyAccess.   Here are links to  the  handouts:

October 11 is the deadline for all late or missing work for
Term 1, and for extra credit work.
You will be able to hand in your unused hall passes
by the last day of the term.

Targets for Today:

I can write a short response.
I can identify characters, setting, and conflict in movies and books.

Today’s  Agenda:

This is a self-starter, so as soon as you come into the classroom, pick up your composition book, and get started writing.  Write about a half-page.  You must write, but you may also, if you have time, add small illustrations.
1.  In your composition book,  respond to this prompt:
Have you ever felt like an outsider?  When has that happened and how, and how did you feel?  If not, tell about people you'ver observed who have been treated like outsiders or who have felt like outsiders.

Definition: Outsider:  a person who does not belong to a particular group.
synonyms:stranger,  nonmember

3.  Getting Ready for The Outsiders

Our First Class Novel: The Outsiders

We will watch a scene from the movie
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

We will watch a short clip from the novel The Outsiders
        by  S. E. Hinton.

Both of these movies are about "outsiders."
And, like you, the narrator of The Outsiders, at the beginning of the book, has just seen a movie with Paul Newman.

Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy

C. Thomas Howell as Ponyboy Curtis

Today we will learn more about some important Elements of Literature.
Discuss:  In the clip from The Outsiders (and in the clip from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), what are the. . .
  1. characters
  2. setting
  3. conflict
  4. protagonist
  5. antagonist
In your composition book, tape the chart on the next page.  We will fill it in together.
