Announcements and Reminders for Thursday, May 9, 2019:      Mike Thayer, author, hunter, gamer, engineer, will be doing a presentation during  CAVETIME on Friday, May 10. Free Tickets are available in the Media Center. Space is limited. Also, he will be speaking during A3 on Friday, May 10.  If you are in any of my English classes and would like to go, and would be a great audience member, I can recommend you.                      We are testing again today.   Please return any classroom books you have checked out by Friday, May 17.  Be very careful not to bump the projector or cart.  Letters About Literature  These students advanced to Round 2, state-level judging, which is an achievement,  but were not among the high winners.    Congratulations! Today’s  Agenda for Thursday, May 9, 2019: Be very careful not to bump the projector or cart. RISE Testing today.   Remember to stow your phone until the bell rings to end class. Bring a water bottle. Bring gum if you want. You may bring your own headphones/earbuds.  Bring a book to read in case you finish early.  When you have finished the test, maintain testing conditions -- no talking or otherwise communicating with other students quietly reading, drawing,  or working the word searches provided by the teacher Knock-knock. Targets for Today: Students will learn Greek and Latin word parts commonly used in English, so they can unlock more unknown words and better understand words that may already be familiar.

Today’s  Agenda: 1. Students who have not finished testing will go to Lab 224 to test with Mrs. Hahn. 2. View a PowerPoint about the history of our language and take cloze notes on the PowerPoint. 3. Create a handy magical study guide for the root words you will need to learn.  It will look something like this: When the study guide is flat, no words can be seen on either side -- except your name on one of the side flaps. After you've folded it to form a W and opened it up, half of your root words with their meanings go on these "inside" sections. After you've folded it the other way to form a W and opened it up, the other half of your root words with their meanings go on these "inside" sections.    Magical Study Guide Directions 1. Fold your paper hamburger style and then again so you have 4 sections. 2.  Lay it out flat, and then refold it just in half. 3.  Use a ruler to measure and mark every .5 (1/2) inch.       Make a mark on the folded edge and on the open fold. 4.  Use the ruler to connect these lines with a straight pencil mark. 5.  Use scissors to cut along the straight pencil lines all the way from the folded edge to the open fold. 6.  Weave the smaller strips of paper through the cut portions.       One strip will be woven in the opposite way from the other.  7. Fold your study guide into a "W" and gently open the middle.  On each strip of the left side, write one of the following prefixes.  Opposite from that, write its meaning. 8.  Unfold your study guide, and fold it the opposite way into a "W," and gently open the middle. On each strip on the left side, write one of the following suffixes. Opposite from that, write its meaning.  Do not write anything but your name  when the study guide is lying flat.  That is what makes it magical.  You will all take a test on the word roots on May  22/23.  On one side -- When it is an X -- write- audi hear dict speak ject throw port carry rupt break scrib/script write spect see, look struct build tract pull vis, vid see On the other side -- When it is an X -- write- auto self bio life graph write hydro water meter measure ology study of photo light scope examine tele far therm heat Book Groups Read  Discuss -- Come up with a question for each group member to research between now and next class.

You may bring your own headphones/earbuds.  Bring a book to read in case you finish early.  Eat and rest well before the test.   Take the time you need, but don't waste time.   Do your best and rock the test!  Just for fun: My daughter's friend posted this on Facebook. "Just now, I looked over my shoulder and jumped when I saw a giant bug sitting there. It was about the size of an earbud on a pair of headphones! A half-second before yelling, jumping out of my seat, and flicking it off of my shoulder, I realized it was the earbud from my headphones." Question: What happens when a cow doesn't shave? Announcements and Reminders for Thursday/Friday, May 2/3, 2019: Breaking News:  Testing has been delayed to next week.  Have a Happy May the Fourth!            RISE Test     -- Come rested, well-hydrated, and well-fed!    Testing has been delayed until next week -- Tuesday for B-Day. B-Day, plan on doing book groups and other activities in class.

Targets for Today: B-Day I can prepare for the state test. I can take challenges!  A-Day I can do my best on the state test.  I can be patient when things are going the way they should.  THANK YOU!

Today’s  Agenda for Thursday/Friday, May 2/3, 2019: B-Day -- No testing.  Testing has been suspended until next week.  Plan on in-class activities including book groups.  1. Work on your comma packets. self-correcting  2. Can You Do This?   Read Various Informational Texts and Answer Questions and take Challenges Can You Do This? 3. Book Groups  --  Do NOT Read ahead of your group. Check-in. Read.  Discuss. --Listen and Respond!  Save the Last Word for Me One student makes a comment or observation. All others in the group respond to that. The first student has the last word.  The next student makes a comment or observation. __________________________________________ Make sure your phone has a safe home while you are testing.  A2-- We will be in Lab 224 to test.    I will assign computers to you.
