Novel: The Hunger Games

Novel: The Hunger Games

I just finished reading The Hunger Games. I had been hearing that it is an amazing book. What I'd heard is right.
See Suzanne Collin's great website at http://www.suzannecollinsbooks.com/
Note that The Hunger Games is recommended for ninth grade and up, while her Gregor the Overlander books are also appropriate for younger readers.

Harris and Me Harris and Me by Gary Paulsen

My review

(I'm on page 150 of 168. 3-2-09 -- Now I've finished it, and like it even better.)

I'm on page 150 of Harris and Me. Almost done, I've loved going back in memory to growing up on a farm, though without a Harris to get in trouble and risk life and limb with!
This gook is about an eleven year old boy who goes to live with relatives on a farm, including an outrageous nine year old boy named Harris. If you are offended by "body-parts" and "bathroom" humor, and by "classic" profanity, you may not want to read this. Other wise it may have you hooting with laughter.
I picked this up because another teacher in the district told me that her junior high reading class is very much enjoying it.

May 2, 2003

May 2, 2003

Students turned in their Book Talk index cards with the following information: title, author, number of pages, genre, short plot summary, a rating using the five star scale on the assignment sheet.

We read chapters 1-3 of Stand Tall, and students filled out a packet (green), answering questions.

Ms. Dorsey held "Book Talks" with several students. We will continue the book talks next time.

Homework: Students are to interview three adults (40 or over) about the Vietnam War.

April 30, 2008

April 30, 2008
Today we finished up Utah State CORE testing. Any students who did not complete all three sessions of testing should see me to arrange a time to complete testing.

If you didn't get the first "before reading" page for our class novel Stand Tall, see me or check in the folders at the back of the room.

Students had an opportunity to read, and to go to the PTSA book fair.

This was the last day of binder checks. Any student who has not successfully completed a binder check should prepare his or her binder and bring it to be checked after school, or leave it in the classroom to be checked if it can be left until the next class meeting.

The "Novel Portfolio" Book Talk is due May 2.

Portfolio Book Approval

Portfolio Book Approval -- Seventh Grade English -- Dorsey
Dear Parents,
During each of the remaining terms of this school year, your student will be doing an assignment called the book portfolio. For Term 2, your student needs to choose a novel of any type
(a fictional book that has at least 100 pages) that he/she has NOT read before, that is at his/her own reading level, and that is not on our department list of books not allowed for the portfolio. (See the back of this form.)
Once the book is chosen, please sign this paper to indicate your approval. Your student must have his/her novel in class with the signed portion of this paper by November 9, in order to receive full points. Sooner is better. Encourage your student to read his/her book whenever and wherever possible.
This term's portfolio assignment will be passed out by November 7. (Sooner, if possible.) I recommend that your student finish his/her book at least a week before the first project due date: November 30. That way he/she will have time to get the project done. The second part of the project will be due December 14. This will be an interesting assignment that requires creativity and understanding of the book. Quality work handed in early is welcome!
Thanks for your help!
Sincerely, Ms. Dorsey
