Poetry by a Friend

Poetry does not need to rhyme.
Making poetry is putting the best of words together in beautiful or striking ways.
Here is the poem: 
This is my favorite kind of snow.
The smallest feather pinpricks that stick in the branches and peel some trees like bananas. 
Humbling snow pulling heavy-armed pine boughs back to earth. 
It bounces all the streetlights, and you can't tell if the sky is purple or yellow, but it's probably both.
Peacemaker snow that crumbles when you try to make snowbullets.
If there does turn out to be an afterlife, I hope it feels like a bright snowy midnight in Liberty Park.

Announcements and Reminders:
      
Book discussions will be held today. Bring your book, your evaluation sheet, and, if you wish, treats. 
There will be a spelling test today on whose/who's and write/right/rite.
Our next spelling test will cover all of this term's words, adding board/bored.
      
There will be no January Book of the Month.
We will concentrate on writing in January.                                                       

Don't forget to write Santa Letters!


Targets for Today:
Language Standard 2 
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Reading: Literature Standard 1 
Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
Writing Standard 1 
Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
Reading: Literature Standard 10 
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

1. Spelling test on who's/whose and right/write/rite.

If you wish, pick up the study sheets for term spelling and argument vocabulary.
If you wish, pick up the extra credit subordinate conjunction list.

January 7/8  with a test on all words for this term
